Art Fair Booth

:: 2010 ::

Here are some wonderful art festivals that, in addition to terrific work, are nice places to spend the day. We have participated in all of these shows.

Only the Smithsonian Craft Show at the Smithsonian Institution carries more authority than THE PHILADELPHIA MUSEUM OF ART CRAFT SHOW as the place to see the best in American craft. Fantastic work exhibited in a fitting atmosphere: live classical music, catered food, tuxedos (at least on opening night).The high quality justifies the high prices. Fine crafts only. Third week in November. $15.00 admission. Benefits The Philadelphia Museum of Art.

AMERICAN CRAFT EXPOSITION, held indoors at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL, features very fine work (fine crafts only) in a relaxed, low-key atmosphere. Nice opening party. Indoors. Admission. Benefits the Evanston and Glenbrook Hospitals. Last weekend in August.

CRAFTS AMERICA produces three equally good indoor shows, the Washington Craft Show, the Westchester Craft Show and the Palm Beach Craft Show – all as good as the above premier shows. All three have wonderful work on display. Admission.

CHERRY CREEK ART FESTIVAL filled a big hole in the Denver area for quality art and crafts and is still a huge success after eighteen years. The community really turns out for this show, in attendance and in volunteer efforts to keep it running smoothly. They even recycle most of the trash! Work from all over the country that usually can't be seen at an art festival except on either coasts or a few big Midwest shows. Art and fine crafts. Held over the Fourth of July weekend. No admission fee. Bring sunscreen. Good food and music, too.

COCONUT GROVE ART FESTIVAL offers more than art. This is a big social event in South Florida. Over a million people turn out for this one! Excellent work from 350+ artists and craftsmen. Interesting music, food and above all , people. Come early, take a shuttle bus in, stay late to have fun in the "village". Art and fine crafts. Third weekend in February. No admission fee. Bring sunscreen.

ANN ARBOR STREET ART FAIR is one of three art fairs that takes place in downtown Ann Arbor, MI. Almost 1000 artists and craftsmen exhibit at these shows. This one is the "original" show. The quality tends to be the best here, but very fine work can be seen at the State Street Art Fair also. Bring good walking shoes if you attempt to see it all! Overwhelming…..
No admission fee. A real circus here for food, political booths and anything else that can be squeezed in. Local merchants also set up tables for sales. Still, the quality is very high – one of the best outdoor shows in the Midwest. Third week in July.

SAINT LOUIS ART FAIR Held in the upscale community of Clayton; a terrific addition to the Midwest art fair scene. Seventeen years old, and, having been patterned after Cherry Creek, it's a winner. First weekend after Labor Day. Weather variable but usually pleasant. Good food and music. No admission fee. Art and fine crafts.

PLAZA ART FAIR 79 years old! Held in Kansas City, MO at the beautiful Plaza area this is an excellent Midwest show of art and craft. The community regards it as the summer season finale. Plenty of good restaurants in area. Art and fine crafts. Fourth weekend in September. Weather variable but usually pleasant. No admission fee.

DES MOINES ARTS FESTIVAL Des Moines, IA. Yet another excellent Midwest show. Nice setting. Nice people, of course.

SUN VALLEY ARTS AND CRAFTS FESTIVAL Sun Valley, ID is a delightful small show in a gorgeous setting and is our local show. Surprisingly good work can be found in this out of the way show. Atkinson Park. Art and fine crafts.
Second weekend in August.

ART IN THE HIGH DESERT in Bend, OR is a somewhat remote regional show but has some excellent work. Started and run by artists for the most part, it is a very pleasant show to attend in a beautiful part of the country. Low-key, usually sparkling weather.

ART IN THE PEARL Portland, OR is a fairly new show and already the most popular in Portland. Located in the cool Pearl District. Lots to do, lots to eat, lots to see in the neighborhood. Labor Day weekend.

We haven’t mentioned many good local/regional shows that are well worth a visit. Often a “little” show will have work that will amaze you just as much as the large premier shows so keep an eye out for something in your neighborhood and support a truly unique American phenomenon!

My husband and I first saw your beautiful work in Sedona (Geoffrey Roth Ltd. in Tlaquepaque) in November of 2005…a trip which ended in our engagement. I’ve loved the look and design of your boxes since that trip and now to have this unique piece of art in my home means so much. Thank you so much, — A.H., Waltham, MA
