Large Double Decker Box 01: Laminated Ziricote in Chechen

WOW! If I do say so myself. It takes forever, about two years in this case, to find just the right exotic end grain Ziricote for the inset. This will be a box I'll use for jurying into shows. A large Double Decker jewelry box utilizing two of our favorite woods. The inset in the top is six panels of end grain Ziricote (Mexico) bookmatched like this: 3-2-1-1-2-3. Two center pieces are bookmatched, pieces 2 and 2 are bookmatched as are pieces 3 and 3. Bookmatching, as you can guess, is similar to slicing a loaf of bread and opening pieces like a book. The body of the box is Chechen, a wood from Central America. Rich color and fairly dense and heavy. Mitered construction with Peruvian Walnut splines for extra strength and visual appeal. Both the top section and the drawer are lined with black UltraSuede. Top section contains black dividers with a tray (made from the same wood as the body) riding on top. Handle is classic Gaboon Ebony. Bottom of the empty drawer is signed and also contains the woods used. A descriptive tag is included and sits in the tray.
